Wicked wicked-ling
Arianna has always behaved well in public especially in restaurants but I think this has gone out the window and it will be awhile before we have dinner/lunch outside again!
Last night, we went out for my birthday dinner. We had decided to go for Thai food which would be a change since it was always Italian coz I just love pasta. Sadly, the restaurant we picked didn’t have any baby chairs available. It was weird. I didn’t think that they wouldn’t have one then again, I guess it was a blessing in disguise. I wouldn’t say that it was a posh place but it was certainly not really a baby-friendly environment with the dim lighting and candles all around.
So we walked around Parramatta a bit but surprisingly there were no other Thai place around. Another bizarre thing because when you’re not looking for one, they seem to pop up everywhere. Anyway, with none in sight, we decided to go for seafood as I had the hankering for a seafood basket and ended up in an Italian place afterall. *lol*
But the seafood basket was just SO expensive and I ended up getting a penne bascaiola which also happened to be on special. My entree was BBQ squids which I absolutely love but it wasn’t as nice as I expected it to be coz I was comparing it to this fish n chips place where I used to get them when we lived in Parra. Anyway, the serving was so large even for an entree! And it was then that the monster in Arianna came out. She was all over the place, hands everywhere! Although she ate her dinner, she was very vocal and it was just not her to be that way. Shrieking and really creating a scene. I did find it a little stressful but what can you do? Ted tried to ‘discipline’ her by firmly saying ‘No’ when she tried to grab at his prawn salad and beer but that only made her shriek louder. So we gave in and let her have her bottle of water which she just kept drinking and not really eating. As long as she was eating something, she was fine but the thing is, she already had a fair bit and I didn’t want to keep giving her food until she puked.
So we pretty much rushed through our food. And what made it worst was that the table was small for 2 adults and a baby in a highchair plus before we were done with our entree, the mains came! So another big mess on the table. Although the waitress apologized for bringing out the mains too early, the damage was done, right? Although the food was nice and it was rather baby friendly since the waitresses came by to play with Arianna and all, we should have sat at a bigger table. Then again, that would mean seating right at the front of the shop. Not a good idea since it was a narrow and long lot. O well, we will drop by again someday but definitely not anytime soon.
The thing is I don’t know what has caused Arianna to be such a ‘monster’ that day. It was just not her at all as I mentioned she has always been well behaved. Perhaps she was overstimulated, I don’t know and I also don’t know how to correct it when she does behave ‘badly’. After all, she is too young to know that we were actually trying to discipline her by saying ‘No’ firmly. Any baby discipline ideas?

Welcome to the club! It will get worse when she starts walking.
September 25th, 2008 at 12:17 pmI’ve been following ur blog for quite some time now and this is the first time commenting. I think u guys should bring her out more often, get her exposed to outdoor acitivities. Or why not take her favourite toy along the next time u guys go out, at least it’ll keep her occupied for a while
September 25th, 2008 at 2:09 pmjesh - hi! thanks for finally making an appearance. :) i didnt know i had silent readers. hehehe! it’s a nice surprise. anyway, i wanted to say that we do go out a fair bit and as i mentioned, she had always been good but dunno what was wrong this time around. also, we never ever leave home without toys - o no, i learnt that the hard way! lol in fact, she kept throwing her toys on the ground for most of the time we were at the restaurant.
DR - wah, so long havent seen u around!! :) well, tq for the heads up, i can imagine how botak i’ll be by then. can u imagine, botak AND buncit??!?!?! omg….
September 25th, 2008 at 3:44 pmno advise really but at this age, we tend to avoid fancy restaurant and go to those family style or take out.
Ava is now older, still like cacing but at least crayons keeps her busy nowadays. also you can try let her walk outside restaurant or something cause they cannot sit still and its a sin to hv them sit while waiting for the food. We did this a few times and it worked great. also a HUGE bib so she can feed herself since the will be too busy to be naugthy
September 26th, 2008 at 2:12 amaida - yea, i know what u mean - this wasn’t really a fancy place. n we normally go to the food courts where she can scream if she wants to too! lol
the thing is arianna isn’t really feeding herself much [thanks to me!] so it would have to be finger foods which is also kind of limited. because she doesnt do finger food much, she tends to stick too much in her mouth. ergo, mummy ends up feeding her. don’t know if i’m doing the right thing or not…. :(
September 26th, 2008 at 10:18 amava used to do that..stick too much in her mouth..i let her..but tell her also..it passed though the only think she tends to put too much in her mouth is popcorn..frank’s fault ajar her..lol hv to be careful of choking only lor..
eh she is more than 1 year…so let her eat herself..fine motor skills mah.

September 28th, 2008 at 3:44 pmI agree with Aida…just let her stuff herself silly (with your watchful eyes). At this age, they love to feel the food in their hands. Just be prepared with plenty of pre-wet tissues for after meal. It gets better as she gets older.
Our only problem with Belle now is she can’t sit still in her booster seat. So, my only advice to you is train Arianna to sit in the high chair. Don’t even think of getting her out of that chair till she’s done with her food. We are learning from mistakes now. So far Cassie is pretty good at sitting while eating.
